Yesterday after posting that Piglet hadn’t had a wash in weeks. A courier in a LWB Mercedes Sprinter misjudged the angle pulling out of her parking space and dragged her van along the driver’s side rear bumper quarter.

She did knock on all the doors in the street to find the owner of the car she damaged (which is legally required that you at least make an effect to mind the owner so there is that). Her father came round later to see if we’d do the repair without involving the insurance companies but said no.

So new drivers side rear tail light and rear bumper respray. On a five and a half month old car. Doh.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Leaving it to the insurance company and the driver’s father to sort out the finances. Insurance is providing a free rental car as the bodyshop can’t give us a like for like courtesy car.

Is the taillight cracked at all? I can’t tell. It might not need to be replaced. Hell, it’s possible everything can be compounded out. If that’s the case, I’ll guess pretty low. Maybe $800 Eurobucks?

If a respray is needed, I haven't a clue. I imagine that paint will be a bitch to match properly. I wonder if they'll have to blend it to get a good match. If that's the case, I say $4400 Eurobucks

Outch. The first scratch is always the one that hurts most.
Love the color though

That sucks man. I know that feeling. I had a guy back into my car in a parking lot to where I needed a new bumper and the corner of my trunk lid straightened out. At that point I had only had the car three months.

I didn’t want to know the price I think I’d probably be sick if they gave me the figure. The rear light isn’t cracked, only scuffed but it’s moulded and not smooth and it’s taken off some of the plastic here and there.

The car being only a few months old should be okay with the blending. Fingers crossed.

On the bright side she went above and beyond finding you, and they seem to be making the repair as painless as possible for you.

Cheers man. It’s not the first scratch on this car. The first was two short but deep scratches in the lower valence on the passenger side rear bumper (goodness knows where they came from), but this is so obvious and in your face it makes me want to cry when I see it or think about it.

I guess the Mercedes did also, which is why it kissed mine. Bloody Mercedes.

Ye’, Piglet is only a couple of months older. People just can’t take care these days. It’s a terraced house street and the roads are quite narrow and care is needed, especially when your driving something so long and tall.

Our insurance dealt with it straight away. They booked the car in for the assessment for this morning and she goes in on Tuesday for the work.

In the U.K. it is the responsibility of the person who did the damage to make every reasonable effort to find the owner and/or leave details of which to be contacted on or drive to the police station and report the incident otherwise she can be done for leaving the scene of an accident, etc... but ye’, it’s good she didn’t leave it for us to find and then see a card or get a call from the police.

“reasonable effort” is also very subjective. She could have considered just waiting around for 5 minutes or knocking on only the closest door reasonable effort. Either way, I’m glad it’s getting taken care of with such little hassle for you.

Sorry to hear, but at least all seems to be working out - kudos to the driver for being honorable enough to try and find you!

Yeah, it’s a legal requirement that they make every reasonable effort to find or contact the owner of report it to the police otherwise she’d be breaking the law.

Poor Piglet :(

I hope they can fix it in a nice way, because Piglet doesn’t deserve to look bad, especially because how well you take care of it.

They did a good job on the last Superb that needed two new passenger side doors and left hand side resprayed (though for six and half feet away at a 60 degree side angle and 10 degree down angle in 2pm sunlight you could make out a lot of fade in, fade out ghosting. It bugged me no end. But this will be a curved surface as opposed to the slab sides of the Mk2 Superb doors so I imagine the light and curved surface will mask any slight variation.

She goes in next Tuesday so hopefully she’ll be all new again and back by Friday.

Going to give her a full clean on Sunday to get her ready.

noice noice! Hopefully it’s going to get a factory painted bumper over a repair job. Touched up bumpers are always noticeable compared to OEM paint

I think they re just going to sand back the relevant area prime the rest and simply paint the original bumper and fit a new tail light. I gave in and looked at the quote, £650-ish for all the work.

There are some sharp angles in the rear bumper that were smoothed in the impact so I should be able to tell if it’s the original bumper or a replacement.

It’s also giving me the chance to try out a couple of new car products. Autosmart Red7 (at £30 for five litres (£6 per litre)) which is similar to Bilt Hamber Autowheels (at £12.95 for a litre) and both are both wheel cleaner and fallout removers in one. The second product is CarPro HydroFoam, which is a cleaner snow foam and Si02 based sealant in one.

cool frijoles. Show us once it’s done sir and how those products work. Those kind of chemical make me think that after a few used the paint will come off lol :]

I’ve used Autowheels on the paint before (it’s not suggested but is safe to). Like with any chemical you shouldn’t let it dry on the car, even car shampoo can damage the paint if left to dry in and be an inconvenience to sort out.

The CarPro HydroFoam is like CarPro Hydro2 and Hydrolite but attached to a high foam shampoo. It simply forms a bond onto the vehicles surface and would last 3 months if not maintained.

The paint at the bodyshop is baked and should be gassed off after a week or two and safe to use the type of products I use. If I was using a more long term product I’d leave it for a few weeks for piece of mind.

My thinking is, if I get the car protected now, then when they come to paint some of the areas they will panel wipe where they intend to spray and continue, while the rest of the car is maintained till I can safely wash the car again.
